What is Abstract Expressionism?
I'm going to talk about something different rather than the definition of Abstract Expressionism. I'm going to tell how are the artworks made and what is going on in the artist's minds. I hope you like this read and develop a different perspective to look at Abstract artworks.
Abstract Expressionism Art Movement started when artist's wanted to express their feelings and thoughts. It was a way for the artists to express themselves. You can understand it better with the help of Jackson Pollock's painting 'The Deep'. At first instance, this painting looks like a play of black, white and yellow paint. It just looks like the artist splashed the paint on canvas, smudged it together and created this pattern. But what the viewer misses is the true meaning behind it. What you are missing to see is the intensity of it. The name itself tells a lot about this masterpiece. This artwork shows depth which we can relate in various ways. Depth for an individual can be a void, it can be a mark of some past experience, a distant memory, someone's absence or a betrayal. It can portray someone's nature or cruel intentions.
As we all know White and Black indicate positivity and negativity respectively. For a brief moment let's reverse these meanings thus making White negative and Black positive. If you look at the same painting with this new theory you can see 'Light at the end of a Forest'. You can relate to this painting as the struggle we all are going through to reach our goals. The feeling we get after seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is beautifully portrayed in this painting. The artist is trying to depict such a beautiful meaning through a visual and keeps all the options going on in his mind while painting. The artist is pouring a portion of his thoughts and soul into the painting and taking art beyond its boundaries.
If you observe Abstract Artworks with a perspective other than just splash of paint you can find a whole new meaning to it which only you can relate to. I hope you comment your interpretation of this artwork and give this masterpiece more angles to look at
